Heat Treatment: A greener option for pallet protection
February 28, 2012

In response to the call for a greener environment, the DOST’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) offers an eco-friendly technology for the wooden pallet industry. The Institute’s Furnace Type Heat Treatment Facility (FHTF) can provide the heat needed to kill insects and other pests infesting wood packaging materials (WPMs) such as wooden pallets.

WPMs are commonly used in transporting commodities around the globe as they are relatively cheaper than plastic and metal containers. However, WPMs made of unprocessed wood are vulnerable to pest attacks and can introduce and spread pests from one country to another.

FPRDI Testing Labs Now ISO-accredited
February 20, 2012

Good news to the testing clients of the DOST’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI). Two of the institute’s testing laboratories (the Furniture Testing Center and Plywood Testing Laboratory) now conform to ISO standards, while one (Pulp and Paper Testing Laboratory) renewed its accreditation according to PNS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 or the General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories by the Philippine Accreditation Office (PAO) last January 12, 2012.

According to FPRDI Testing Laboratories’ (FTLs’) Quality Manager Ms. Adela S. Torres, “The benefits of an accredited laboratory include increased reliability and quality of service, customer satisfaction, and better working conditions. Being PNS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accredited, FTLs can be expected to provide consistently valid test results to its customers.”

“Additionally, customers who had their products assessed by us will no longer need to be re-tested since the standards used by ISO accredited laboratories are globally recognized. This will then save time and money for the exporters,” Torres added.

The FTLs’ accreditation validity is until January 11, 2017. # (Maybell Mariella A. Amador, 20 February 2012)

FPRDI Testing Lab Helps Construction and Wood-based Clients
February 17, 2012

For 55 years now, the DOST Forest Products Research and Development Institute has been helping players in the construction and wood-based industries test how strong their materials are and how fit these are for different uses and conditions.

Thru its Physics and Mechanics Testing Laboratory, FPRDI evaluates the physical and strength properties of concrete hollow blocks, concrete cylinder, pallets, lumber and non-wood forest products such as bamboo and rattan.
