A major problem in the utilization of rattan, and other non-wood forest products for furniture and handicraft is fungal staining. It causes discoloration on the surface. The presences of unsightly blemishes reduces the saleability of the products.
The bleaching and dyeing processes help remove or camouflage the blemishes or discoloration, hence improves the surface appearance of the raw materials.
