A new hub for innovation and training in forest products has officially opened in Butuan City, bringing fresh opportunities for local industries and communities that depend on forest-based resources.
Launched on 30 July 2025 at the Caraga State University (CSU), the Forest Products Innovation and Training Center (FPITC) in the region is a joint initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), CSU, and the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI). The Center is designed to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the wood and non-wood forest sector by helping them modernize operations and upgrade skills. Additionally, it seeks to increase the application of sustainable forestry methods in Caraga and neighboring areas.
In his message during the program, DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the significance of investing in innovation beyond Metro Manila. “This Center connects national innovation programs with regional development. It is a strategic move to boost local industries, create opportunities, and help the region make the most of its natural resources.”
DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon, in his message of support, explained why Caraga was chosen as the site for the first FPITC.
“Caraga is considered the timber corridor of the Philippines, making it a vital area for forest products processing and utilization,” said Cabangon. “Upgrading the facilities and capabilities here will not only benefit local MSMEs through research, technology, and product development, but will also inspire more students to pursue forestry and related courses. The Center will also be open for MSMEs to use at minimal cost, allowing them to access the tools and expertise they need to improve and compete.”
The FPITC in Caraga is the first of several to be established across the country. Similar facilities are planned for Leyte and Isabela. This is part of a broader push by DOST and DOST-FPRDI to enhance the country’s forest-based industries by improving access to expert support, modern tools, and practical solutions tailored to local needs.
CSU President Dr. Rolyn C. Daguil welcomed the partnership and expressed full support for the Center’s programs. He noted that the initiative aligns with CSU’s goal to become a key driver of regional development.
Meanwhile, DOST Undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang and CSU College of Forestry and Environmental Science Dean Roger T. Sarmiento, both sent messages of support, highlighting the value of applying innovation, research, and capacity building for regional development, particularly in resource-rich but underserved areas like Caraga.
The center is expected to serve as a venue for hands-on training, product testing, technology transfer, and applied research. It will also help develop homegrown innovations that add value to forest-based materials and support Caraga’s push for a more sustainable and competitive wood industry.
