A workplace where everyone feels valued and respected is not just ideal, but a necessity for true progress.
The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) recently partnered with the Makiling Forest Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MFMC) for a comprehensive Gender Sensitivity Training (GST).
Held on 09 September 2025 at the FPRDI Conference Hall, the activity brought together employees and cooperative members to dive into the fundamental concepts of Gender and Development (GAD). The session aimed to heighten awareness of gender-related concerns and champion inclusivity in their programs and activities.
Participants explored key topics including sex and gender, gender roles and stereotypes, gender discrimination, and the various societal influences that perpetuate it. They also examined national and international commitments to gender equality and learned how gender mainstreaming serves as a vital tool for achieving equity in service delivery.
DOST-FPRDI Director Dr. Rico J. Cabangon reflected on the training's importance to the Institute's mission. "DOST-FPRDI is dedicated to leveraging science and technology for national development. This mission is incomplete without a steadfast commitment to gender equality. By strengthening our gender mainstreaming efforts, we're not only building a more equitable workplace but also ensuring our research and services truly benefit all members of society, regardless of gender."
The training was facilitated by Ms. Joanne Rose Belle B. Ople-Vale, a certified member of the National GAD Resource Pool of the Philippine Commission on Women. She emphasized that while embracing GAD principles is a journey that may not happen overnight, continuous engagement in such training is a powerful step toward fostering personal values that prevent discrimination.
For DOST-FPRDI, GST is a key starting point for the Institute's more extensive gender mainstreaming efforts. GAD-TWG Chairperson Julius T. Pelegrina explained that while the Institute has already made progress, there is still much to accomplish. By equipping employees with essential knowledge, the agency is taking a “significant stride toward becoming fully gender-responsive.”
