FPRDI Furniture Testing Lab Offers Lead Content Test
February 04, 2015

The Forest Products Research and Development Institute’s Furniture Testing Center (FFTC) now offers lead content analysis. The license to operate was awarded to FFTC last 01 October 2014 and will be effective until 31 December 2015.

Mr. Alvin Vardeleon of the FFTC.

According to FFTC's Technical Manager Engr. Victor G. Revilleza, the testing service will measure lead in furniture finished with paint and other similar surface-coating materials. Other products such as beds, bookcases, dressers, desks, cribs, toys and other articles used by children can also be subjected to this test.

Mr. Edward Marasigan of the FFTC.

Lead, a chemical substance frequently used in paints and coatings, in large amounts can cause kidney damage, nerve disorders, high blood pressure, reduced IQ and slowed developmental growth.

In January 2014, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued a Chemical Control Order (CCO) for Lead that "strictly prohibits the use of lead and lead compounds in the local manufacture of packaging for food and drink, toys, school supplies, cosmetics, water pipes and other consumer products."
