The Los Baños LGU is eyeing the charcoal briquetting technology as a livelihood option for local communities and as a means of utilizing the municipality’s agro-forest wastes.

Charcoal briquette is a compacted mass of fuel made from a mixture of charcoal fines from carbonized agro-forest wastes like rice hull, sawdust, coffee bean hull and starch, and molded under pressure. As an energy source, charcoal briquettes can replace a sizable amount of the country’s expensive sources of household fuel – liquefied petroleum gas or LPG, kerosene and electricity.

Because they are compact and uniform-sized, some users prefer briquettes because they are less messy and easier to handle than ordinary charcoal. They are also easy to ignite, slow burning, emit more intense heat per unit volume, and almost smokeless when burning.
