FPRDI wins major awards in STARRDECS’s RDE Symposium

The Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) bagged several major awards in the recently concluded 26th Regional Symposium on Research, Development and Extension Highlights (RSRDEH) of the Southern Tagalog Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (STARRDEC).
Besting 15 entries, the poster “Suitability of Some Industrial Tree Plantation Species and Fruit Trees for Wine Barrel” by Simplicia B. Katigbak, Engr. Caezar A. Cuaresma, Dr. Erlinda L. Mari, For. Robert A. Natividad, Erlinda I. Dizon, Ma. Socorro R. Dizon and Irma I. Palanginan (+) placed first in the Best Research and Development Poster category. Dr. Rico J. Cabangon, Irma I. Palanginan (+), Nathaniel Ramos and Dr. Blessie A. Basilia’s “Development of Fire Retardant from nano-Structured Montmorillonite Clay”, meanwhile, snatched the second spot.
FPRDI also figured in top spots for the Best Research Paper Presentation. The paper of Dr. Cabangon’s team placed 1st in the Development Category, while Foresters Arsenio B. Ella and Florena B. Samiano’s “Enhancing the Adaptive Capacity of Indigenous Peoples by Promoting Sustainable and Community-based Resin Tapping of Almaciga (Agathis philippinensis Warb.) in Selected Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) Areas in Palawan and Sierra Madre” came in as second in the Extension Category.
Held annually, the RSRDEH aims to “recognize quality research, development and extension results in Southern Tagalog” and “package better technologies for countryside development”. This year was the first time that extension projects were included in the symposium, which took place last 30 September to 1 October 2013 at the Occidental Mindoro State College and was participated in by 18 agencies. ### (Apple Jean C.
