FPRDI Wood ID Seminars Support the Log Ban
September 3, 2013

Dr. Ramiro Escobin, Scientist I, gives a seminar on Wood Structure and Identification to some technical staff of Region XI’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The seminar is part of DENR’s efforts to more effectively implement Executive Order 23, the law which declared a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the country’s natural and residual forests.

“This type of training for DENR has been a regular activity of FPRDI thru its Wood Anatomy and Forest Botany Section for more than 10 years now,” said Dr. Escobin. “As DENR staff learn to identify various Philippine wood species, they would be better able to pinpoint the source of the logs passing thru their checkpoints, whether these come from natural and residual forests, or from tree plantations which are not covered by the log ban.” (Rizalina K.
