November 27, 2012

Dr. Marina A. Alipon, Scientist I, has recently been named this year’s Most Outstanding Scientist (for Research in Forestry and Natural Resources Utilization) by the Forests and Natural Resources Research Society of the Philippines (FORESPI). The award was given on 16 November 2012 during the FORESPI General Assembly Meeting at the Nicolas P. Lansigan Auditorium, UPLB College of Forestry Natural Resources (CFNR), College, Laguna.

FORESPI recognized Dr. Alipon “for her 32 years of profound and painstaking scientific research works on the physical and mechanical properties of industrial tree plantation species (ITPS), lesser-known species (LKS), and other Philippine timber species which provided clear and precise benchmark information and brought practical applications to wood-using industries, to engineers and architects for safe and economical designs, to researchers exploring the potential of certain species or species groups for specific end-uses.

“For developing a simple and time-saving prediction equation for the seasoning characteristics of phil timbers by using only three parameters. For bringing to the Philippines the first portable patented digital wood moisture meter thru her group’s research innovation and design.

“Currently adopted by more than 100 clientele and assisting small and medium-based enterprises in improving the quality of their wood products, the invention is attested as more efficient and affordable than imported moisture meters.”
