For. Ella bags CFNR’s Mancono Award

Forester Arsenio B. Ella was one of two recipients of the Most Outstanding Alumnus Award (Mancono Award) during the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources’ (CFNR) 102nd Foundation Day and Alumni Homecoming last 27 April 2012.
The highest award given by the UPLB-CFNR Alumni Association to its distinguished graduates, the Mancono Award was conferred to Ella for his “exemplary performance that earned him honors as a respected scientist in the field of forest products utilization research; for having authored books and numerous scientific articles on wood anatomy, wood identification and utilization of non-wood forest products, and for his distinctive accomplishment in generation, commercialization and transfer of technologies on scientific tapping of tree exudates.” Ella finished his BS in Forestry in 1973 and his MS in Forestry in 1983, at UPLB.
The scientific procedures Ella formulated for harvesting different kinds of local resins have been proven to prolong the life of exudates-producing trees and maximize resin yield. As a result, they help enhance the livelihood of various indigenous communities across the country. These include the Dumagats, Tagbanuas, Bataks, Mandayas, Maranaos, Palau-ans, Manobos, Isnegs, Aetas, and Bungkalots.
Ella joined the Forest Products Research and Development Institute in 1974. In 2001, he was conferred the rank of Scientist III in the DOST Scientific Career System. A recipient of numerous awards, Ella was given the UPLB-CFNR Institutional Service Award in 2003 and the National Research Council of the Philippines’ Research Achievement Award also in 2003, among others.
