FPRDI joins LB community in celebrating Women’s Month
March 19, 2012

Recognizing the crucial role of women in shaping society, the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), led by Deputy Director Felix B. Tamolang, joined three of its neighbors in the Los Baños Science Community last 06 March in celebrating Women’s Month.

In his message during the main program, Tamolang stressed that women today are highly valued in the workplace; some are even occupying critical positions in their respective offices. “In FPRDI for example, we have had a female Director, Dr. Florence P. Soriano. We also have two female Career Scientists and a Division Chief,” Tamolang said. He mentioned that the unique needs and situations of women are likewise considered in community-based projects that the Institute implements.

Bannering the theme “Women Weathering Climate Change: Governance and Accountability, Everyone’s Responsibility”, the celebration underscored that many of the indigenous knowledge and practices of women can help ease the impacts of climate change. It also urged women to be more involved in government programs related to disaster preparedness.

The celebration kicked off with an advocacy walk and the main program in the morning, followed by a Seminar on Geo-hazard Map Reading and Interpretation in the afternoon. Laguna Board Member Angelica Jones Alarva served as the Guest Speaker, while Raymond Thaddeus Ancog of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ (DENR) Mines and Geosciences Bureau was the Resource Person during the seminar.

Led by the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) - DENR, the event was participated in by FPRDI, DENR-IV, and the UP Los Banos College of Forestry and Natural Resources (UPCFNR). ### (Apple Jean C. Martin, 07 March 2012)
