DOST-FPRDI to hold Bamboo Forum in S&T week

Bamboo gets a share of the limelight at the 2015 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) as the Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) will hold a bamboo forum on 28 July 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. Dubbed “That Thing Called Kawayan”, the forum aims to encourage the public to take advantage of the bamboo processing and livelihood technologies of DOST-FPRDI.

The event will feature presentations by bamboo experts from DOST-FPRDI and other agencies, as well as exhibits and demonstrations. The experts panel will include the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau’s (DENR-ERDB) Director Dr. Henry Adornado for bamboo propagation and plantation establishment; Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary for Regional Operations Zenaida Cuison – Maglaya for marketing of bamboo and its by-products; Filbamboo Exponents, Inc. President and COO Atty. Dulce Blanca T. Punzalan and FPRDI’s Dr. Rico J. Cabangon for bamboo processing and utilization; and DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute’s (TAPI) Engr. Edgar I. Garcia for funding assistance of bamboo projects.

The bamboo forum coincides with DOST’s NSTW Celebration on 24-28 July 2015 which embraces the theme “Philippines: A Science Nation Innovating for Global Competitiveness”. The NSTW showcases latest breakthroughs in the Philippine science community and “aims to bring science and technology closer to the people”. (Maybell Mariella A. Amador, 14 July 2015)#
