For. Robert A. Natividad and Dr. Rico J. Cabangon of the Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) presented their papers at the ASEAN Bamboo Symposium 2016 (ABS 2016) last 27-29 September 2016 at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
For. Natividad’s paper titled "Prospects on Climbing Bamboo Utilization and R&D Challenges” tackled the potential of climbing bamboos as raw materials for furniture and handicraft in the Philippines and the challenges that come with tapping this potential, i.e., research on proper processing, product design and development.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cabangon's paper titled "Improving the Utilization of Bamboo for Engineered Products Manufacture" discussed the development of engineered products from the harvesting and processing wastes of kawayan tinik (Bambusa blumeana) to maximize the use of the culm and reduce waste and cost.
Centered around the theme "Sustainability and Advancement in Bamboo Utilization”, ABS 2016 featured issues and challenges in bamboo plantation and management; technology; product development and design, marketing and commercialization, and bamboo and community.
