For. Jennifer M. Conda of the DOST’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) recently joined other botanists and plant scientists in the largest global conference on the plant sciences.
She presented a poster titled “Leaf architecture of selected Diplazium species (Athyriaceae)” during the 19th International Botanical Congress (IBC 2017). The poster tackled how the vein arrangement in a leaf can be used in classifying the Philippine edible ferns.
For. Conda shares, “It is very inspiring to see how technologically advanced other countries are in the field of plant sciences. For future studies, the DOST-FPRDI may adopt technologies in digitization of wood specimens, DNA sequencing and modern techniques in plant identification. These would allow researchers to identify wood and plant specimens faster and more accurately.”
The IBC is a platform where plant scientists all over the world can share new research findings, and establish international collaborations. Happening once in every six years, IBC 2017 was held in Shenzhen, China from 22-29 July 2017. More than 6,000 participants from 77 countries attended the seven-day event. ### (Apple Jean Martin- de Leon, 10 August 2017)
