The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) was named the Best Institute for Registered Utility Model (UM) during the recent 2017 DOST Intellectual Property Awards. The Institute was cited for reaping the most UM patents among DOST agencies.

“Utility model”, according to the Intellectual Property Office- Philippines, “refers to a patent for a new and useful but obvious improvement on a given technology.” Patent protection for commercially viable inventions is a must in this day and age when technology is advancing very rapidly.

The following are the Institute’s newest UM-registered technologies:

  1. Wine Barrel from Big-Leafed Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) by Simplicia B. Katigbak, Engr. Caezar A. Cuaresma, Dr. Erlinda L. Mari, and For. Robert A. Natividad
  2. Process of Manufacture of a Wine Barrel from Indian Mango (Mangifera indica) by Simplicia B. Katigbak, Engr. Caezar A. Cuaresma, Dr. Erlinda L. Mari, and For. Robert A. Natividad
  3. Wine Barrel from Mangium (Acacia mangium) by Simplicia B. Katigbak, Engr. Caezar A. Cuaresma, Dr. Erlinda L. Mari, and For. Robert A. Natividad
  4. Wine Barrel from Indian Mango (Mangifera indica) by Simplicia B. Katigbak, Engr. Caezar A. Cuaresma, Dr. Erlinda L. Mari, and For. Robert A. Natividad

  9. Thermal Modification of Bamboo by Engr. Juanito P. Jimenez, Dr. Carlos M. Garcia and Ms. Sheryll C. Micosa

Aside from the patents, FPRDI was also awarded for two technical papers published in journals recognized by the global Institute for Scientific Information. These were: “Stress-based Kiln Drying of Gmelina arborea Roxb. Lumber” by Engr. Wency H. Carmelo, Dr. Ramon A. Razal, Dr. Chrysline N. Pinol and Mr. James Fuller and “Assessing the Utilization of Falcata [Paraserianthes moluccana (Miq.) Barneby & J.W. Grimes] for Lumber Production” by Dr. Marina A. Alipon, For. Pablito Alcachupas, Dr. Emelyne C. Cortiguerra and Engr. Elvina O. Bondad.
