University of the Philippines professor and former DOST-PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Carlos Primo C. David stressed the importance of creating impact on the lives of the people thru publicly funded researches and projects (photo above).

Speaking before the science workers at the DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), Dr. David said that science must create “positive societal change”.

“As a form of public investment, research and development (R&D) must be directed towards manpower development, industry competitiveness, reduction of disaster impacts, and environmental protection, among others,” he shared.

According to him, the benefits of scientific researches and projects must trickle down and be felt by the public, and must respond to people’s actual needs. “Impact is measured in only three broad impact areas: economic benefits, social equity and environmental sustainability. Embracing impact science provides maximum benefits to an organization’s stakeholders,” he noted.

Dr. David also highlighted the need to communicate the impacts thru narratives or personal stories of success, statistics and infographics, and benefit-cost analysis.

Titled “Impact Science: Maximizing R&D Impact”, the seminar was held last 28 June 2018 at the DOST-FPRDI. It was organized by the Technical Seminar and Conference Committee chaired by Dr. Maria Cielito G. Siladan. ### (Apple Jean Martin- de Leon, 11 July 2018)
