The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Plant Industry (DA-BPI) will collaborate on an initiative that hopes to develop more bamboo innovations for the agriculture sector.
The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Agreement last 7 November 2023 for the project “Bamboo LIQUOR Ph: Local Innovation for Quality Use of Organic Pesticide Resource in the Philippines”. Among others, it will study the development of organic pesticides to help increase the produce of local onion farmers.
DOST-FPRDI Director Romulo T. Aggangan (3rd from left) and DA-BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban (2nd from left) lead the MOA signing for a research collaboration on bamboo.
Funded by the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), the project strengthens the cooperation and convergence of DOST-FPRDI and DA-BPI in bamboo R&D, as well as in high value crops that are also a priority of the government.
The MOA signing was led by DOST-FPRDI Director Romulo T. Aggangan and DA-BPI Director Gerald Glenn F. Panganiban. Also, present in the event were DOST-FPRDI’s Technology Innovation Division Chief and Program Leader of Bamboo and Other Non-Wood Forest Products Dr. Loreto A. Novicio, and Project Leader of Bamboo LIQUOR Ph Dr. Jennifer P. Tamayo; and DA-BPI’s Chief of Crop Pest Management Division Dr. Peter M. Magdaraog.
The research project is part of the “Establishment of Philippines-China Joint Program on Bamboo Research” collaboration between DOST-PCAARRD and Jiangxi Academy of Forestry signed in September 2021. ### (Jennifer P. Tamayo & Apple Jean M. de Leon, 08 November 2023)
