The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) fortifies its commitment to a sustainable future by continuously developing innovations that are eco-friendly and relevant. Among these are the Institute’s bamboo technologies featured during the 2024 National Science, Technology and Innovation Week (NSTW) held last November 27 - December 01 in Cagayan de Oro City.
In the forum “Bamboo Innovations: Technologies for a Greener Economy” conducted on November 28 and coincided with the NSTW, the Institute explored collaboration with industry players by discussing how bamboo could be a viable opportunity for local enterprises and institutions.
Showcased were the Bamboo for Wellness Products that highlight bamboo’s antimicrobial properties and potential for livelihood; the multi-functional school furniture Silyang Pinoy that utilizes engineered bamboo and is especially useful during calamities; the Bamboo Octagonal Jointing System that provides flexibility in designing bamboo structures; and the Bamboo Pellet, which is a more earth-friendly alternative to fuel.
Industry players and other participants flocked to the Luxe Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City to listen to discussions about the Institute’s bamboo innovations.
DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon explained how the Institute is exploring collaborations and R & D initiatives to further support bamboo sector in the country.
Technical Services Division (TSD) Chief Maria Cielito G. Siladan closed the Bamboo Forum with an inspiring message.
TSD’s Mr Rodell Papa discussed the process of technology adoption.
Led by the DOST-FPRDI’s Technical Services Division, the forum was attended by Provincial S & T Office (PSTO)-La Union Director Jonathan Viernes; PSTO-Davao del Norte Director Judy Donna Nueva Ecija; representatives of iBamboo Agriculture Cooperative and Mindanao State University Marawi; and other DOST provincial offices.
DOST-FPRDI’s bamboo innovations featured in the forum were also displayed at the NSTW exhibit, along with the Institute-crafted bamboo musical instruments, engineered bamboo products, ‘Foresee Foresea’ sustainable display, and wood identification services.
Exhibit-goers were treated to an engaging display of DOST-FPRDI-crafted bamboo musical instruments.
The ‘Foresee Foresea’ sustainable items illuminated the DOST-FPRDI exhibit booth.
The basics of wood anatomy was explained in the interactive Wood Identification display
“Studies on bamboo technology stand at the forefront of the Institute’s efforts in championing the use of non-timber forest products (NTFPs). As a raw material for durable structures, world-class furniture and handicrafts, and quality musical instruments, bamboo continues to draw the Institute’s attention and prods us to study it with more depth, breadth and intensity,” said DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon.
“In the years to come, DOST-FPRDI will venture into more projects involving bamboo. In fact, it is now studying the bamboo’s potential as a cost-effective and environment-friendly solution to armyworm and cutworm attacking onion plantations. Should research results be positive, it can open new economic opportunities for bamboo growers who rely mostly on its traditional uses,” added Cabangon.
“Themed “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan”, the NSTW is a stage for science and technology’s contributions to national development. It includes various activities and interactive exhibits organized by DOST and its member organizations. ### (Apple Jean C. Martin- de Leon, 17 December 2024)
