The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) is launching a design competition that will showcase the versatility of wood and non-wood forest-based materials.

Open to all college students enrolled in NCR and Region IV-A schools, the Likhang DeskArte will feature desk accessories using materials such as bamboo, rattan and vines. Participants must submit their design from May 17 to June 15, 2025. After which, ten finalists will be selected and will advance to the Prototype Production round. Winners will be awarded during the anniversary celebration of DOST-FPRDI on July 4, 2025.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. said that the contest is a good way to promote the use of local materials in sustainable design. “By embracing innovation and sustainability, young designers can help elevate the forest products industry, protect our natural resources, and contribute to economic growth. We look forward to seeing designs that are not only functional but also ignite a deeper appreciation for our forest products and the role they play in building a more sustainable and inclusive future.”

Likhang DeskArte is about inspiring the next generation of designers to reimagine form, function, and sustainability,” shared DOST-FPRDI Director Rico J. Cabangon. “We hope that thru this contest, the youth will be able to showcase their creativity while promoting the value and potential of forest-based materials,” he added.

Likhang DeskArte is one of the highlights of DOST-FPRDI’s 68th Anniversary celebration from June 30 to July 4, 2025. The ten shortlisted entries will be displayed during this event. ### (Mary Zarah Jane A. Moredo, 16 May 2025)
