Philippine teak, ideal for mass propagation
The Philippine teak (Tectona philippinensis Benth & Hook, f.) has a lot of important potential uses and is ideal for massive propagation by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). This was concluded in a recent FPRDI study funded by the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP)- Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
FPRDI’s For. Arsenio B. Ella, Scientist III, says: “Using international test standards, we looked into the anatomy, strength and related properties of the species. We found out that Philippine teak has high-density, high-strength wood which can be recommended for heavy-duty structural uses such as building ships and sailboats, heavy-duty furniture, bridges and wharves, mine timber, posts and beams.
It certainly can be recommended to the DENR’s Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) which is currently looking for outstanding tree species that it can use in its massive propagation program.”
The Philippine teak predominantly grows in dry, exposed ridges of southeastern Batangas. (Rizalina K. Araral, 16 September 2014) #
