FPRDI bags 2nd place in NRCP Scientific Poster Competition

The Forest Products Research and Development Institute- Department of Science and Technology (FPRDI-DOST) poster won 2nd prize in the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Scientific Poster Competition held during NRCP’s 81st General Membership Assembly last 26 March 2014 at the Manila Hotel.

FPRDI Scientist Arsenio B. Ella, For. Florena B. Samiano and For. Emmanuel P. Domingo’s poster won under Cluster 1- Governmental, Educational and International Policies / Social Science / Humanities category. Titled “Enhancing the Adaptive Capacity of Indigenous Peoples by Promoting Sustainable Community-Based Resin Tapping of Almaciga (Agathis philippinensis Warb.) in Palawan and Sierra Madre, Philippines”, it underscores the need for a scientific and sustainable tapping of resin-producing trees, specifically almaciga.

Director Aggangan talks on issues affecting ASEAN forestry

What are the global issues presently influencing forestry and the forest products sector in the ASEAN region? FPRDI Director Romulo T. Aggangan talked about this in an in-house seminar held last 20 March 2014 at FPRDI. Aggangan’s talk was based on the 14th International Seminar on Current International Issues Affecting Forestry and Forest Products held 4 July 2013 in Brunei Darussalam.

According to Aggangan, “ASEAN ministers agree on the multi-dimensional importance of ASEAN forests, the potentials of the forestry sector, and the need to ensure that forests help push sustainable development, enhance ASEAN community building and help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.”

FPRDI, DA-BAR donate equipment to CamNorte pili processors

A set of the FPRDI charcoaling drum kiln and charcoal briquettor was turned over last 6 March 2014 to the Camarines Norte Pili Growers and Processors’ Association (CNPGPA) thru a joint project of FPRDI and the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research.

In a ceremony held in Brgy. Matnog, Basud, Camarines Norte, FPRDI Director Romulo T. Aggangan and CNPGPA Chair Mr. Melchor Brinas signed the Memorandum of Agreement on the equipment turnover.
