Director Aggangan attends the 15th ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry Meeting

Director Romulo T. Aggangan attended the 15th ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry (ASOF) Meeting and Related Meetings, in Hanoi, Vietnam on 25-29 June 2012.

Says Dr. Aggangan, “Our participation in the discussions centered on our role in implementing the 2010-2015 plan of action on the development of forest products R&D, particularly in putting up a regional network to facilitate exchange of information, technologies and expertise in forest products development and trade.”

He adds, “The Philippines, thru FPRDI, has been assigned the important task of compiling ASEAN information on promotion, transfer of technologies and innovations on plantation timber species as well as non-timber species.” (Rizalina K. Araral, 14 August 2012)#

Tamayo presents paper in Asian “green economy” forum

Dr. Jennifer P. Tamayo, Senior Science Research Specialist at FPRDI’s Technology Innovation Division, presented a paper during the 12th Science Council of Asia (SCA) International Symposium held from 11-12 July 2012 in Bogor, Indonesia. Around 150 delegates from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam participated in the said event.

Tamayo’s paper titled “Biosorption of heavy metals in mine tailings using Acacia auriculiformis barks” discussed the effects of heavy metals on humans and aquatic organisms, and the potential of acacia barks to remove these toxicities from waste products of mining.
