FPRDI Identifies Wood Species at Aguinaldo Shrine

FPRDI experts Mr. Fernando C. Pitargue, Jr. and For. Glenn B. Estudillo recently identified the wood species used in the furniture and woodcrafts found inside the historic Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite. The site where Philippine Independence was proclaimed in 1898, the shrine is filled with wooden art pieces that give visitors a glimpse of the country’s rich cultural heritage.

“Many documents have been written about the Aguinaldo Shrine, but none of them lists the particular species used in its many antique wood items” said For. Estudillo. “Our services were tapped by the Office of the Mayor since shrine visitors usually ask about the type of wood used for these pieces and museum staff cannot give accurate answers.”

FPRDI and TRC to construct FTLD for bamboo processing

In a bid to advance the country’s bamboo processing industry, the Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) and Technology Resource Center (TRC) will collaborate in a project that seeks to construct a furnace- type lumber dryer (FTLD) with a boiling vessel for bamboo slats.

The project is in line with TRC’s establishment of a Bamboo Processing Facility in Mabalacat, Pampanga. Aside from the design, construction, and evaluation of the 1000 bdft-capacity FTLD, FPRDI will also provide the design and specifications of the machinery line-up for producing bamboo skewers and chopsticks.

FPRDI, JG Casus ink pact on bamboo treatment for housing project

The Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) and the private company JG Casus Corporation (JGCC) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the preservative treatment of bamboo poles that will be used in the mass production of low-cost houses.

Architect Jesus G. Casus, President of JGCC and the company’s representative during the MOA signing, developed the construction method called “Casus Low Cost Bamboo-Reinforced Concrete Technology” which will substitute bamboo for reinforced steel bars commonly used in construction today. FPRDI, meanwhile, will provide the technical assistance on the preservation of bamboo poles to prevent fungal and insect attack. For several decades now, the Institute has been an authority in the preservative treatment of wood, bamboo, rattan, and other non-timber forest products.
