DOST-FPRDI develops moisture meter for bamboo and other non-timber forest products

The DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute’s (DOST-FPRDI) moisture meter for bamboo is now out in the market.
The device was developed in collaboration with DOST- Advanced Science and Technology Institute and YONGDEN Technology, and was funded by the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).
The FPRDI moisture meter is a handheld device that reads the amount of water present in non-timber products. It is especially calibrated for several bamboo species that are extensively planted in the country and are used for engineered bamboo. These include Kawayan Tinik (Bambusa blumeana J. A. & J. H. Schultes.); Giant Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper (Schultes f.) Backer ex Heyne); and Botong (Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro).
DOST-FPRDI sits as APAFRI ExeCom member

The DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) has recently been elected member of the Executive Committee of the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI) from 2021-2024.
The election happened during APAFRI’s 9th General Assembly on 7 December 2021 and attended virtually by 26 institutional members from 16 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
In a letter, the APAFRI Secretariat noted that with DOST-FPRDI’s “vast experience and knowledge”, the organization will “surely be able to achieve greater success.”

What may have been just a pile of waste waiting to decompose becomes a profitable venture for a local coconut farm— all thanks to a DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) technology.
The Thega Coconut Farm (TCF) sought DOST-FPRDI’s assistance in 2018 to convert the farm’s abundant supply of coconut shells into charcoal briquettes.
“Every 45 days, TCF generates about 1,600-2,400 kilos of coconut shells from copra making,” explained Sarahme Corazon B. Esteban of DOST-FPRDI’s Socio-Economics and Marketing Section (SEMS).
