FPRDI starts developing standards for e-bamboo

Engineered bamboo may soon become a more popular material for making housing components and furniture here in the Philippines – thanks to FPRDI’s efforts at improving their quality.

Also called “e-bamboo”, engineered bamboo includes a wide range of composite products manufactured by binding together bamboo strips, slats, strands, particles, fibers or veneers with a suitable glue.

Digital wood moisture meter figures in international exhibit

FPRDI’s Digital Wood Moisture Meter was one of the technologies showcased during the 5th FAJR International Inventions and Innovation Exhibition 2013 held last 4-7 February 2013 in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran.

Among the 1,000 inventions screened, only 330 were chosen to be part of the event. Representing the Philippines were FPRDI’s Dr. Marina A. Alipon, Scientist 1, and Ms. Grecelda A. Eusebio, Chief of Business Development and Intellectual Property Section - Technical Services Division.

Climbing bamboos show promise

Did you know that a relatively unknown plant that grows freely in the country’s fields and forests promises to be a good raw material for making handicrafts and furniture parts?

According to the DOST’s FPRDI, various kinds of climbing bamboos may be used as substitute to raw materials commonly used by handicraft and furniture producers -- medium strength wood, rattan, and erect bamboos. First, because climbing bamboos are generally as strong and flexible as these conventional materials, and second, because they thrive in many parts of the country.
