Alipon is FORESPI's 2012 Outstanding Scientist

Dr. Marina A. Alipon, Scientist I, has recently been named this year’s Most Outstanding Scientist (for Research in Forestry and Natural Resources Utilization) by the Forests and Natural Resources Research Society of the Philippines (FORESPI). The award was given on 16 November 2012 during the FORESPI General Assembly Meeting at the Nicolas P. Lansigan Auditorium, UPLB College of Forestry Natural Resources (CFNR), College, Laguna.

FORESPI recognized Dr. Alipon “for her 32 years of profound and painstaking scientific research works on the physical and mechanical properties of industrial tree plantation species (ITPS), lesser-known species (LKS), and other Philippine timber species which provided clear and precise benchmark information and brought practical applications to wood-using industries, to engineers and architects for safe and economical designs, to researchers exploring the potential of certain species or species groups for specific end-uses.

FPRDI bags awards in STARRDEC’s R&D Symposium

Besting 29 other entries, Engr. Dante B. Pulmano’s poster titled “Design and Fabrication of a Bamboo Flattening Machine” won 2nd place in the Best Research and Development Poster category in the recently concluded 25th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights of the Southern Tagalog Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (STARRDEC).

“The FPRDI-developed bamboo flattening machine can flatten bamboo culms into planks to create engineered bamboo products (EBPs) such as laminated veneers and laminated bamboo veneer lumbers, structural strand composites, fine boards and particleboards. These EBPs can be turned into furniture pieces, construction components, and handicrafts,” explained Pulmano, a Senior Science Research Specialist at FPRDI’s Technology Innovation Division.

Forester Ella named 2012 Outstanding UPLB Alumnus

Forester Arsenio B. Ella was one of the six recipients of the 2012 Outstanding UPLB Alumni Award (TOUA) during the university’s Alumni Fellowship and Awards Night at the EB Copeland Gymnasium last 09 October 2012.

The UPLB Alumni Association (UPLBAA) recognized Ella as the 2012 Outstanding Alumnus for Natural Resource Technology Development "for his contribution to the development and transfer of technologies including but not limited to resin and bark harvesting that has benefited and touched the lives of indigenous people in the upland communities of the country and for putting into action his personal and professional advocacy for community-based forest management (CBFM) including livelihood projects for different people's organizations in designated CBFM and Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) areas."
