The Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) is set to cater to more clients from the furniture and related industries as it opens its Furniture Testing Center’s (FFTC) Transit Testing Laboratory (TTL).
“The TTL is a facility that aims to test the performance of packaging materials used for transporting furniture products, among others. Based on the testing standards of the International Safety Transit Association (ISTA), TTL machines will simulate the conditions when shipping a material from one location to another. Most importers require this kind of testing from local manufacturers,” said Mr. Victor Revilleza, FFTC’s Technical Manager.

Five million pesos-worth of state-of-the-art equipment were recently acquired by the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) to beef up its Furniture Testing Center (FFTC). The new equipment include the chair rotation test machine which evaluates the swivelling and rolling resistance of rotating chairs; goal post test machine that performs fatigue and static load tests on all types of chairs and beds; side-to-side durability test machine for office chairs; and arm durability test machine for arms of chairs.
“With this new addition to FFTC’s modern facilities, we are better able to help local manufacturers improve the quality and design of their furniture, and help them get a bigger share of the market,” said Mr. Victor Revilleza, FFTC’s Technical Manager.
Established with funding support from the DOST Grants-In-Aid, the International Tropical Timber Organization, and recently from the 2011 general appropriation capital outlay, the FFTC is the lone furniture testing facility in the country after the closure of the Bureau of Product Standards’ (BPS) furniture testing laboratory and the transfer of the Bureau Veritas’ testing center to China. ### (Apple Jean C. Director Romulo T. Aggangan (first row, second to the left), poses for a class picture with delegates from 52 countries at the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Directors’ Forum and All Division 9 Conference held 7-11 May 2012 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“The forum,” according to Dr. Aggangan, “discussed issues on forest research and education management and provided an excellent platform for the vivid exchange of information and good experiences and practices on research management.”
The conference, on the other hand, gave him insights on the crucial role of the social sciences in forest governance research. It likewise oriented him about the latest global developments in forest policy, governance and participatory management. (Rizalina K. Araral, 07 June 2012) #
