Villar Foundation eyes FPRDI technologies for livelihood program
April 23, 2012

Officers of the Las Pinas City-based Villar Foundation, Ms. Cynthia Villar and Engr. Dexter Gonzales, visited FPRDI last 29 March 2012 to get an orientation on some of the Institute’s technologies. Ms. Villar expressed interest in adopting different FPRDI technologies to aid in the foundation’s livelihood program. These include the handmade paper processing equipment with dryer and improved biomass carbonizer and charcoal briquettor.

"The Villar Foundation believes that acquiring the equipment will be a more sustainable way of providing opportunities for their stakeholders rather than handing them the capital which may eventually run out if not properly managed," said For. Felix B. Tamolang, FPRDI Deputy Director.

FPRDI and FMB sign pact for a research project

The Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Forest Management Bureau (FMB) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) last 08 March 2011 for the project “Study on the Heating Value of Selected Fuelwood Tree Species”. Signed by FPRDI Director Romulo T. Aggangan and FMB OIC-Director Neria A. Andin, the project entails a budget of Php 200,000 and will be implemented until 31 October 2012.

According to Engr. Belen B. Bisana, Chief of FPRDI’s Bio-energy and Equipment Development Section, the project aims to determine the amount of heat released by different wood species during combustion. “The higher the heating value, the more suitable the wood species is for fuelwood. With this project, we hope to recommend the best species for fuelwood production specifically in Tagkawayan, Quezon,” added Bisana. The giant ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala), Benguet pine (Pinus insularis), yemane (Gmelina arborea), and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) are just among the many species that would be studied.

A component of FMB’s project “Addressing Climate Change through Community-Based Fuelwood Plantation Development and Management”, the study is funded by the Korea Forest Service in support to the government’s National Greening Program. ### (Belen B. Bisana and Apple Jean C. Martin, 30 March 2012)

ITTO and FPRDI help bring hope to forest-based communities
March 29, 2012

Two-and-a-half years ago, the townsfolk in Basud, Camarines Norte had very little livelihood skills. They made money mainly by making charcoal and planting rice. They were so poor, they could not even buy a decent pair of rubber shoes.

Today, Basud folks are looking forward to better days. Thru a forest-based livelihood project by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the FPRDI, many of them have learned to make baskets from local vines. They sell these in the local public market and in trade fairs and get badly needed cash for their families.
