FPRDI, JG Casus ink pact on bamboo treatment for housing project

The Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) and the private company JG Casus Corporation (JGCC) recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the preservative treatment of bamboo poles that will be used in the mass production of low-cost houses.
Architect Jesus G. Casus, President of JGCC and the company’s representative during the MOA signing, developed the construction method called “Casus Low Cost Bamboo-Reinforced Concrete Technology” which will substitute bamboo for reinforced steel bars commonly used in construction today. FPRDI, meanwhile, will provide the technical assistance on the preservation of bamboo poles to prevent fungal and insect attack. For several decades now, the Institute has been an authority in the preservative treatment of wood, bamboo, rattan, and other non-timber forest products.

FPRDI holds water hyacinth processing training

A two-day training on water hyacinth processing for handicraft was held last 26 and 30 September 2011 at the DOST National Capital Region Office.
The training aimed to help Metro Manila communities utilize the water hyacinth, also popularly known as “water lily” that usually clog bodies of water in and around the metropolis.

FPRDI teaches handmade papermaking to Laguna students

As part of its Dalaw-eskuwela Program (DEP), FPRDI, in coordination with Alternative Learning System (ALS) in Bay Laguna, conducted a handmade papermaking demonstration last 12 October 2011.
Held at Bay Elementary School, the workshop was attended by 53 students, teachers and parents from Bay, Luisiana, and Pagsanjan Laguna. It aimed to introduce to the participants a way to earn extra income through handmade paper making.
FPRDI’s Dalaw-eskuwela Program (DEP) aims to promote relevant FPRDI technologies to local schools and universities as well as their surrounding communities. (Margie Brendia, 28 October 2011)###
