Women’s Coop receives FPRDI Water Hyacinth Dryer

A livelihood cooperative that specializes in water hyacinth products was recently awarded with a water hyacinth dryer developed by the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI).

The Rizal-based Bangon Kababaihan Bagong Cainta (BKBC) cooperative received the dryer from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) - Region 4A under DTI’s “Shared Service Facility” project. The turnover was held last 9 September 2013 at the BKBC Livelihood Production Center.

FPRDI takes local bamboo workers’ skills to the next level

For 10 years now, the furniture products of Dahile Bamboo Workers’ Association (DABAWA) in Brgy. Dahile, Mabinay, Negros Oriental have been limited to sala sets and lounge chairs in basic designs. To help improve and expand their product line, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)- Region 7 and the local government of Dumaguete City tapped the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) to conduct a training on furniture and handicraft making last 19-22 August 2013.

“Male participants were taught how to assemble furniture pieces such as bed, center table, sofas and lounge chairs using improved designs. The female attendees, meanwhile, were trained on making bamboo novelty items,” said Zenaida R. Reyes, FPRDI Training Coordinator.

FPRDI Wood ID Seminars Support the Log Ban

Dr. Ramiro Escobin, Scientist I, gives a seminar on Wood Structure and Identification to some technical staff of Region XI’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

The seminar is part of DENR’s efforts to more effectively implement Executive Order 23, the law which declared a moratorium on the cutting and harvesting of timber in the country’s natural and residual forests.
