Furniture testing staff train in U.K.

The three technical staff of the FPRDI Furniture Testing Center (FFTC) recently completed a comprehensive training course in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom on the flammability testing of furniture products. Held last 20 to 30 May 2013, the course was conducted by the Furniture Industry Research Association International Ltd. (FIRA).

The training acquired by Engrs. Victor G. Revilleza, Alvin F. Vardeleon and Edward Paul Marasigan covered all aspects of flammability testing including cigarette, match flame and crib tests for a wide range of products, i.e., seats, pillows, cushions and mattresses and bed bases. The test procedures follow British Standards (BS), European Standards (EN) and ISO standards.

Forester Ella named one of UPAA’s Distinguished Alumni

The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) recently conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Environmental Conservation and Sustainable Development to Forester Arsenio B. Ella, Scientist III at the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI). With the theme “Bagong Siglo, Bagong Sigla”, the awarding was held during UPAA’s Centennial Celebration on 22 June 2013 at the UP Theater, UP Diliman.

Ella was recognized for his contributions to sustainable methods of tapping the resin of various forest tree species including almaciga (Agathis philippinensis Warb.), pili (Canarium ovatum Engl., [Canarium luzonicum (Blume) Gray], and Canarium asperum Benth), apitong (Dipterocarpus spp.), palosapis (Anisoptera thurifera (Blanco) Blume ssp. thurifera), and Benguet pine (Pinus kesiya Royle ex Gordon). These methods have “prolonged the life of trees, sustained and maximized resin production and contributed to poverty reduction among our indigenous communities.” Ella has gone all over the country, teaching the proper way of resin tapping to indigenous groups in Mindoro, Palawan, Sierra Madre and the Davao and Cordillera regions.

FPRDI and DA-BAR project seeks to build pili enterprise in Cam Norte

The pili (Canarium ovatum Engl.) industry of the province of Camarines Norte is about to get a boost as the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) recently teamed up with the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) and the Camarines Norte Pili Growers and Processors Association (CNPGPA) for the project “Technology Adoption and Utilization of Community-Based Pili and By-products Processing and Packaging in the Province of Camarines Norte”. The inception meeting was held on 09 May 2013 at the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in Daet, Camarines Norte.

Explained Project Leader For. Arsenio B. Ella, Scientist III at FPRDI, “Confectionaries are the most popular products made from the pili nut. The local government, however, wants to maximize the use of the nut and explore other kinds of products that can be made out of it.”
