FPRDI helps rebuild Visayas

FPRDI is helping rehabilitate the disaster-stricken Visayan provinces using the thousands of trees knocked down by super typhoon “Yolanda”.

The Institute has deployed a task force in Tacloban City, Leyte and Marabut, Eastern Samar which is working closely with DENR-Region VIII in converting the felled trees – many of which are coconut - into lumber. The lumber will be used to build temporary shelters and repair buildings.

This was how Mr. Oscar Compra saw the Training on Charcoal Production and Briquetting at the Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI) last 26-27 November 2013.

Alipon attends global wood adhesives meet

Dr. Marina A. Alipon, Scientist I, recently delivered a scientific paper at the 2013 International Conference on Wood Adhesives at the Intercontinental Hotel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Entitled “Performance Evaluation of Various Adhesives on Engineered Bamboo”, Alipon’s study determined some important physical and mechanical properties of kawayan tinik (Bambusa blumeana J.A. and J.H. Schultes) and giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper (Schultes f.) Backer ex Heyne) glued with polyvinyl acetate (PVac), both water-resistant and for indoor use, and urea formaldehyde (UF).
